Potential of Greek olive oil exports to Brazil
The Brazilian olive oil market is becoming one of the most important in the world. According to data released by the International Olive Council, Brazil imports of olive oil for 2011/12 exceeded the 71.000t mark. That is an increase of 9 per cent from the 2010/11 period.
Greek exports to the Brazilian market are limited. On average they amounted to 437,2t for the period 2007/8 to 2011/12. The strongest year was 2010/11 where exports reached 672,5t, approximately 53,8 per cent above the average.
The potential for Greek olive oil exports to Brazil remains great. As the Brazilian olive oil market develops, demand for Extra Virgin Olive Oil and quality products will increase. Greek quality companies should start considering promoting added value olive products to the Brazilian market.
As both Greeks and Brazilians love barbecue, perhaps some added value olive oil products could be herb infused olive oil (already used in Greece with oregano for example) or ready-made dressings (with honey, balsamic vinegar and olive oil).
The ELEONES team is currently working on similar projects to develop new quality products like the above mentioned. Perhaps our Brazilian friends will be some of the first to taste them!
