Greek olive oil exports on the rise.
According to data presented by the International Olive Council, Greece is the third biggest exporter of olive oil in the EU accounting for 9% of intra-EU exports following Spain who is the biggest exporter with 72% of intra-EU exports and Italy with a share of 16%.
Greece’s intra-EU exports continue to rise, reaching 79.575t in 2010/11 following an increase of 31% for the 2009/10 season and a 14% increase for the 2007/08 season.
One interesting detail is that Italy imports 84% of the total Greek intra-EU exports, followed by Germany with 7% and the UK with 2%.
The Greek olive oil exported to Italy is used, because of its high quality, to blend Italian olive oils and then exported to other EU and non-EU countries as Italian!
This is exactly the reason why we created ELEONES. We want to end this trend of bulk exporting fine Greek olive oil by adding local value here in Greece and exporting branded our premium quality products. This effort is very well timed as both farmers and bottlers are severely hit by the financial crisis in the country.
The ELEONES team is working round the clock, in such difficult times for Greece, against the current, in order to expand its exports network and product range in 2012.
