Exports of Greek Olive Oil to Japan on the rise, market more appealing to ELEONES
The Japanese olive oil market has expanded approximately 10% in terms of volume between 2014 and 2015 and around 27% in terms of value for the same period.
This small but evolving market seems a lot more interesting for ELEONES products than a couple of years ago. ELEONES has been monitoring the Japanese market for quite some years now despite the fact that Greek olive oil exports to the Japanese market are still very small, approximately 750-800 tons for 2015 despite the fact that they were up by about 20% compared with 2014. The market share for Greek olive oil is approximately 2%, stable between 2014 and 2015. The leading exporter of olive oil to Japan is Italy with a market share of approximately 51%, followed by Spain with market share of around 43%.
In ELEONES’ team opinion the average Japanese consumer, who is by default more health conscious than American and European consumers, is ready for products like the ELEONES Early Harvest as s/he appreciates the beneficial qualities of olive oil and substitutes other vegetable oils in favor of olive oil.
ELEONES enters markets where other Greek olive oil brands find it difficult, like the demanding and highly competitive US market, and is currently working on different strategies in order to enter the promising Japanese market.
