Major ELEONES markets continue to grow
Recent data published by the International Olive Council (IOC) brought smiles to ELEONES team members’ faces as it shows significant growth for key ELEONES markets.
The data published by the IOC shows an increase in imports of olive oil in the USA, the major ELEONES market, by 4,60%. The total imports of olive oil in the USA reached for the crop year of 2013/14, 315.554 tonnes when the previous crop year the same number was 298.850 tonnes.
The imports of olive oil in Canada, one of the important ELEONES markets with great potential, showed an increase of a promising 10%. This in the ELEONES’ team view is considered to be a breakthrough in consumer behavior. Olive oil, in combination with the relatively low prices for the 2013/14 crop year, seems to have made its way through to the Canadian dinner table. The annual per capita consumption of olive oil now stands at about 1,15L according to ELEONES calculations. Recent studies in Canada showed that the average Canadian fully understands the health benefits related to the use of olive oil.
Japan another of the markets that ELEONES is closely monitoring for the past few years, also showed a dynamic increase in imports. The imports of olive oil have reach 56.217 tonnes increased by 4,20%. The annual per capita consumption of olive oil in Japan remains low at approximately 0,45L well behind other countries. The ELEONES team continues to believe that Olive Oil consumption in Japan will increase in the years to come.
