Greek exports of olive oil to Bulgaria doubled
Greek olive oil exports to Bulgaria continue to rise for the fifth year in a row according to a report released by the Greek office for economic and commercial affairs in Sofia.
Greece is now the second biggest exporter of olive oil to Bulgaria following Italy. If this trend continues in a couple of years Greece could become the leading exporter of olive oil to the Bulgarian market.
As the standard of living in Bulgaria rises, consumers turn their backs to sunflower oil -the traditional locally produced oil of choice- preferring olive oil as a healthier alternative.
However the annual per capita consumption still remains very low, approximately 200grams, when in Greece the per capita consumption is close to 20Kg.
This is where the potential for this market lies for Greek olive oil exporters.
